“Enter the Dragon” 2019 – Campi Bisenzio, Italy
The piece is placed on the fraction of San Donnino (14km outside Firenze) right on south facade of the “Scuola elementare Vamba”, one of the few primary Chinese school in Italy. Back in the 90’s San Donnino became popular for the Chinese immigration phenomenon favored by the local tradition of leather craftsmanship, creating by couple of generation one of the biggest Chinese community in Italy (most of them moved to Prato a decade ago). The town, rapidly nicknamed “San Pechino” by the locals, witnessed huge integration problems, strongly divided by nationalities. Nowadays the interaction between cultures start his mixing process favored by the flourishing of the youngest generations, the very first that speaks both languages – even today in most Chinese families parents doesn’t speak any Italian.
The piece depict the arrival of a huge and heavy culture barely supported by adults but strongly hold up by -our of scale- children, to express their natural way of doing integration. Everything’s about the dragon is based on contrast: lightness/heaviness, monstrosity/allure, exertion/playfulness. Style is didactic and illustrative, in order to ease the interpretation by each community.
Colors and composition are inspired by traditional Chinese paper cut and “Lavoratori” by master Duilio Cambellotti.
